Making sense of the 20 per cent off-the-job apprenticeship funding rule

One of the most important apprenticeship funding rules changes from 1st May is the requirement that every apprentice "spends at least 20 per cent of their time on off-the-job training". This simple sentence raises a series of questions, such as how to define "their time" and "off-the-job training".  The Skills Funding Agency has said that "their time" refers to contracted employment hours and said: "Off-the-job training must amount to 20 per cent of the apprentice's contracted employment hours across the whole apprenticeship. "We do not stipulate how this should be spread out" and "It cannot include time spent on English and maths, or on training to acquire skills, knowledge and behaviours that are not required in the standard or framework"... English and maths: double-whammy!

We've all heard the expression "use it or lose it" and this applies equally to our English and maths skills as it does to what we do with our hands as stylists.  The next time one of your apprentices logs on to bksb to complete some English/maths tasks, why not suggest you sit beside them for 5-10 minutes to see what they are working on?  The double-whammy is that 1) showing interest in what your apprentice is doing increases their motivation and 2) it just might help refresh what you learnt all those years ago at school!

New offence of sexual communication with a child

The Justice Secretary Elizabeth Truss, has announced that a new offence of sexual communication with a child will come into effect on 3 April 2017. The offence will cover both online and offline communication, including through social media, e-mail, and letters, with adult groomers facing up to two years in prison and being automatically placed on the sex offenders register . . .
