This Week's News 20.01.17
National rates from 1st April 2017
£7.50 per hour - 25 years and over
£7.05 per hour - 21-24 years
£5.60 per hour - 18-20 years
£4.05 per hour - 16-17 years
£3.50 for apprentices under 19 or who are 19 or over in the first year of their apprenticeship
Important! During work trial periods, new employees who are not yet signed up as an apprentice, must be paid the minimum wage for their age rather than the apprentice wage.
It is against the law for employers to pay workers less than the National Minimum Wage or to falsify payment records. If an employer doesn't pay the correct rate, a worker should talk to their employer and try to resolve the issue informally first. If this doesn't work, a worker may make a formal grievance to their employer. A worker can make a complaint to HMRC (Her Majesty's Revenue and Customs) who will investigate the complaint. If HMRC find that an employer hasn't paid at least the National Minimum Wage, they can send a notice of arrears plus a penalty for not paying the correct rate of pay to the worker. The penalty for non-payment is 200 per cent of the amount owed, unless the arrears are paid within 14 days. The maximum fine for non-payment will be £20,000 per employee. Employers who fail to pay fines will be banned from being a company director for up to 15 years.
The difference between the national living wage and the living wage
The new National Living Wage is different from the Living Wage, which is an hourly rate of pay and updated annually. The Living Wage is set independently by the Living Wage Foundation and is calculated according to the basic cost of living in the UK. Employers choose to pay the Living Wage on a voluntary basis.

Partner Salon Network Meeting
Another very successful and busy Partner Salon Network meeting took place on Tuesday 17th January at the University of Surrey in Guildford.
A record number of salon owners and In Salon Assessors attended and the room was buzzing with activity. Topics covered include two very informative presentations from our MD Lesley Ellis: one about Safeguarding and Prevent and the other about the forthcoming major changes to Hairdressing apprenticeships, which come into effect from 1st May 2017. Dennis Macco from Macco's in Byfleet shared good practice about the induction of new staff and explained the induction handbook that he has put together.
In addition to this, Lauren and Linda ran the very first maths and English club, which was very well attended by nearly 20 apprentices! Initial feedback suggests that this was a great success and we hope to make this a regular event.
Thanks to all who attended.
The agenda and minutes can be found here (you will be required to login first).
