Safeguarding
The spotlight for this month's newsletter is safeguarding. With specific focus on sexual harassment due to this topic being recently talked about in the media. It is important that we help our young people to form healthy relationships and not be afraid to speak out against any form of harassment.
What is sexual harassment?
Sexual harassment is unwanted and unwelcome behaviour of a sexual nature which interferes with a young person's right to learn, study, work, achieve, or participate in activities in a comfortable and supportive atmosphere.
Under law and policies, sexual harassment is illegal and is prohibited in educational and work settings. Sexual harassment may involve a boy harassing a girl, a girl harassing a boy, a boy harassing another boy, or a girl harassing another girl.
Our apprentices learn what behaviour is not ok
It is not OK to grab, touch, or pinch the private body parts of another person.
It is not OK to grab another person's underwear or to pull someone's clothing up or down to show their underwear or body parts.
It is not OK to say nasty things about anyone's private body parts.
It is not OK to make fun of someone for being a boy or being a girl.
It is not OK to tell stories about anyone's body parts or their private behaviour.
It is not OK to give an unwanted kiss or hug or to dare someone else to do that.
It is not OK to brush up against someone in a way that makes them feel bad.
It is not OK to pass notes, pictures, jokes, or cartoons that make someone feel uncomfortable.
Calling out unacceptable behaviour
It is important for apprentices to know that they can call out and report anything that makes them or someone else feel uncomfortable.
How to report a concern
If you or anyone you know has been harmed or is at risk of being harmed in any way, then please speak to ITS' Designated Safeguarding Lead - Lauren Pullen, who will be able to offer help and support by contacting ten/dtl-sti//nerual or 07875 303317. Alternatively, please speak to your Trainer/Assessor who will refer the concern on your behalf.
Reminder - have you claimed your "hire a new apprentice" incentive?
If you employed a new apprentice between 1st October 2021 and 31st January 2022 and they started their apprenticeship (i.e. were signed up by us) by 31st March 2022, you have until 15th May 2022 to make your claim for the incentive. As with the previous schemes, YOU are responsible for making the claim via the apprenticeship service, we cannot do this for you, but we don't want you missing out!
If you have an apprentice on the apprenticeship service, that meet's the eligibility criteria, you need to make your claim on the apprenticeship service by the deadline of 15th May. Please be aware that you will be asked to accept a declaration on the apprenticeship service to confirm you meet the eligibility criteria for this scheme.
How to claim the incentive
- Login to your apprenticeship service account (you will need to use the email that you set the account up with and password you created).
- Scroll down to "finances" on the homepage (Note: do not click on "finance†link at the top of the page, that will not take you to the right place).
- Once you scroll down to the finances section, you should see an option in there for "your hire a new apprentice paymentsâ€. Click on it.
- Then select "apply for the hire a new apprentice paymentâ€.
- Follow the instructions on each page (you will need your bank details).
We will be ringing round eligible employers in April to double check.

AELP online careers fair
AELP intends to host a virtual national apprenticeship and careers fair in October 2022.
Aimed at a national audience primarily in Years 10 - 13, it will highlight the availability of apprenticeship and career options in particular industries and sectors - as well as with specific employers.
We expect this national event to take place in mid-October 2022. By working with Amazing Apprenticeships and the Careers and Enterprise Company, the event will attract attendees from all over the country.
The virtual exhibition hall is expected to be divided into themed spaces in which stands can be built. An early conception of the design is of a central "entrance hall" which would host a number of stands giving general information and guidance. We also anticipate further specific halls on specific occupational themes in which employers and apprenticeship providers are available.
All stands can be overseen by live staff who are able to interact with delegates via a private chat function, and the stands can be populated with publications, resources, video clips, etc as required. Stands will also offer a booking function whereby meetings can be booked for subsequent times to explore particular matters in more detail.
Project planning is at an early stage, but we would be interested to hear from employers and providers who may be interested in exhibiting, or of sponsoring particular areas of the exhibition.
If you are interested please complete the expression of interest form here.
Post 16 Review of L2 (& below) Qualifications
The DfE are in the process of conducting a post-16 qualifications review. The attached presentation slides provide a detailed account of the review and below is a summary of its background.
As you will know, the Hair Professional apprenticeship standard is being revised. Although, the trailblazer group has not yet submitted a revised version to the IfATE for approval.
DfE review background
- The current qualifications landscape is complex, with around 12,000 qualifications at level 3 and below - around 8,000 of these are at level 2 and below
- Over the past decade, evidence has highlighted weaknesses in the quality of technical education. The 2011 Wolf Review and 2016 Sainsbury Review identified that too many qualifications were poor quality and poorly understood
- In response we launched an ambitious programme of reform, with the introduction of T Levels at its centre, alongside a review of post-16 qualifications at level 3 and below
What have we done so far?
- First stage consultation in 2019 set out our ambition for a streamlined system where all qualifications are high-quality, necessary, have a distinct purpose and lead to good outcomes
- Second stage consultation in 2020/21 on reform of qualifications at level 3, followed by Policy Statement in July 2021
- Call for evidence on qualifications at level 2 and below in 2020/21 - 371 responses
- Confirmed removal of funding approval from c5,000 qualifications with low and no enrolments, including over 3,000 at level 2 and below
An overview of the consultation proposals
- Qualifications at level 2 should support progression to further study/training at level 3, or directly into skilled employment in some sectors
- The majority of technical qualifications at level 2 should align with employer-led occupational standards
- For 16-19 year olds studying at level 2 who are aiming to get a job at that level, we propose a two-year study programme to prepare them for the world of work
- The focus of study for most learners at level 1 and below should be progression onto a qualification at level 2 or above that provides entry into a skilled occupation, or progression to a work-based pathway
- Basic skills qualifications in English, maths and digital, and ESOL qualifications, will continue to be vital for many learners
- Personal, social and employability qualifications should align with national standards
Prevent training for ISAs and Employers
The Education and Training Foundation have published updated Prevent training designed specifically for employers and training staff. The online training takes approximately 50 minutes and candidates will receive a certificate upon successful completion of the assessment.
All partner salons will shortly be receiving an email from the Admin team which will include the link to the ETF training. It is essential that a nominee from each of our partner salons complete the training to ensure compliance with the Prevent Duty. Thank you for your support.
We love to celebrate the achievements of learners and partner salons. Please let us know if you have something to share!
