ITS a hair thing - November 2018

Welcome to the first issue of ITS a hair thing! Bringing you the news you NEED to know, must have information and the celebration of learners' achievements.

We are delighted to kick start this first issue with some GREAT news!:

Employer Apprenticeship fees halved to 5%!

The 10% fee that employers must pay for 19+ learners when they take on apprentices will be halved. This will bring a saving of £350 for employers taking on a 19+ Level 2 Hair Professional and is the solution we have been waiting for to reduce the employer costs of Level 3 progressions!

Benefits of Apprenticeships

We know we don't need to tell you how beneficial an Apprentice can be to your business. But just in case you'd like to know more, the National Apprenticeship Service has published a new guide giving employers the information and benefits of recruiting apprentices and includes statistics about the benefits of apprenticeships and some inspiring stories from employers - find it here.

Budget 2018: Apprentice minimum wage set to rise again

The national minimum wage for apprentices will rise again in April, from £3.70 to £3.90 per hour. Rises in the national minimum wage from April are as follows:

  • 16- to 17-year-old, the increase is from £4.20 per hour to £4.35.
  • 18- to 20-year-olds, the increase is from £5.90 per hour to £6.15
  • 21- to 24-year-olds, the increase is from £7.38 per hour to £7.70.

Sourcing Hair Models

Our Learners tell us that finding models can be a tricky business! ITS has come up with an idea to assist them, while helping others in the community. Download our samples of flyers that you can personalise and take to a local Food Bank for inclusion in their parcels. In turn, those recipients can ring to determine your salon's need and availability. Please let us know if you need assistance in locating a Food Bank near you!

Need support with your Social Media?

Rick Beard, Director of So Beard Ltd has been in contact to extend an offer to ITS Partner Salons to discuss affordable Social Media solutions. Several of our Partner Salons have already engaged the services of So Beard Ltd for as little as £50 and confirm they would recommend them to others. So Beard's website can be found here.

Cyber Security Guidance for Small Businesses

The National Cyber Security Service has published some useful information about how to improve cyber security within your organisation - quickly, easily and at low cost. Find out more here.

Health and Safety guidance from HSE

Workers are as likely to have an accident in the first six months at a workplace as they are during the whole of the rest of their working life. The extra risk arises due to:

  • lack of experience of working in a new industry or workplace
  • lack of familiarity with the job and the work environment
  • reluctance to raise concerns (or not knowing how to)
  • eagerness to impress workmates and managers.

People are at particular risk of injury when they are new to job as they may be unaware of existing or potential risks. Take a look at the HSE advice to protect those new to a job, including six steps to protect new workers.

We love to celebrate the achievements of learners and salons. Please let us know if you have something to share!

  • Please remind learners to record their 20% Off the Job Training hours in their OJT log.
  • Learners are required to complete a minimum of 1 hour, per subject of maths and English independent study - a positive prompt from you will make all the difference 😊.
  • Questions, questions and more questions! Orally questioning learners during assessments will help prepare them for the End Point Assessment - it's also a great way of testing for areas of development.
  • Our C&G External Quality Assurer gave us the inside scoop that learners are failing the End Point Assessment due to unsuitable clothing and footwear. Closed toe shoes and appropriate clothing that are free of rips and tears are a must.
  • With the winter nights drawing in, please ensure learners are aware of how to stay safe when travelling to and from work.

Have a great month!
