ITS a hair thing - January 2021

Happy New Year and welcome to the January issue of ITS a hair thing!

Providing apprenticeships during the coronavirus (COVID-19) outbreak

As you will be aware, the entire South East region and most of the UK are now in Tier 4, full guidance is available here.

For work based programmes (including apprenticeships), the government has reaffirmed that apprenticeship delivery and assessment (including the assessment of functional skills qualifications) is extremely flexible and should continue to take place in person where doing so remotely is not possible.

Educational delivery remains a government priory in Tier 4 regions and this allows the continuation of face-to-face training and education as long as suitable Covid-19 precautions are maintained.

However, in consideration of the high rate of COVID-19 transmission and in line with the government's phased return to learning, ITS will deliver all training sessions remotely until 18th January 2021.

Your Trainer/Assessor will be contacting you this week to discuss and agree training and assessment plans for individual apprentices.

If you have any questions or concerns, the ITS Office team are available between 09:00 - 16:30 via Tel: 02392 591 666 or Email: ten/dtl-sti//ofni.

Apprentice Incentive

You will be aware of the apprentice incentive scheme for employers hiring new apprentices which was launched last year. Originally the scheme was to run from 1st August 2020 to 31st January 2021. However, Rishi Sunak announced in his spending review that the incentive scheme would be extended to March 2021.

See FE Week article

You therefore have more time to sign up a newly recruited employee (must be recruited after 1st August) to an apprenticeship and be eligible for this incentive payment. However, you need to have an apprenticeship service account to claim your incentive. The ITS office will liaise with you on receipt of an apprenticeship application to provide instructions on how to set this up if you haven't already done so. Please also be aware that we need to fit in a visit prior to sign up visit to carry out a skills check and assessment of prior learning. So, we will need the apprentice application in asap if you want to pursue the incentive.

Reminder: Claim your incentive (if you are eligible)

As we have explained, the new incentive will be paid directly to you by the Government and the only way you will receive the incentive payments is by making a claim via your apprenticeship service account. Only YOU can do this. We do not have access to this facility to do it for you.

If you have an apprentice on the apprenticeship service that meet's the eligibility criteria below, you need to make your claim on the apprenticeship service.

*NOTE: Scheme has now extended to 31st March 2021 as per article above.

How to claim

  1. Login to your apprenticeship service account.
  2. Scroll to the finance section where you should see "apply for the hire a new apprentice payment". Click on it.
  3. Follow the instructions on each page.

Please note you will need the salon bank details to hand.

The ESFA have created a helpful step-by-step video on how to apply. Click here to watch the YouTube video. We recommend you watch this ahead of starting your claim.

Courtesy calls

We were due to contact you in October for our second round of courtesy calls. However, we appreciated you were all very busy, having come out of the first lockdown, and did not necessarily have the time to talk to us. These calls are very important as they are designed to check in and catch up, giving you the opportunity to voice any success stories or concerns that you may have. It also gives us the chance to gather any information that we can use to improve the service we offer you as well as updating you with anything new and exciting that is coming up. We decided a survey might be easier for you to fit into your day!

Employers were sent an email last month with the link to the survey. Thank you to those that have completed it, we really appreciate the feedback. If you have yet to complete it, please find the survey link below:
