ITS a hair thing - January 2019

Happy New Year! We hope you enjoyed the well-earned festive break. Team ITS are looking forward to a successful 2019 supporting our fabulous learners and partner salons!

Partner Salon Network Meeting *New Venue*

We have listened to your feedback regarding the shortfalls of the University of Surrey meeting venue and have spent some time researching alternatives for the Partner Salon Network meetings. The next meeting will be held on Tuesday 12th February and we are in the final stages of confirming The Hog's Back Hotel, Farnham GU10 1EX as the new venue which is easily located just off the A31, has ample free parking and no need to print parking permits! The final joining instructions and meeting agenda will be emailed to you this week - we look forward to seeing you all there 😊.

Level 3 Hairdressing - your opinion matters!

The Institute for Apprenticeships (IfA) have developed the Advanced and Creative Hair Professional Standard as a Level 3 progression route. The standard is now in the final stages and will be launched once the assessment plan has been approved. We will be contacting you this month to seek your opinion on whether you would value the provision of this new standard based on the associated costs/outcome for your apprentices.

When can you pay the minimum wage?

The Education and Skills Funding Agency (ESFA) have clarified their firm stance on this ruling: the apprentice minimum wage can only be paid once learners are signed up to the apprenticeship programme. Therefore, all employees must be paid the appropriate minimum wage during any period between date of employment and apprenticeship programme sign-up date.

Apprentices are entitled to the apprenticeship wage if they're either:

  • under the age of 19
  • aged 19 or over and in the first year of their apprenticeship.

As a reminder, the minimum wage rates will increase from April 2019 as follows:

Year 25 and over 21 to 24 18 to 20 Under 18 Apprentice
April 2018 (current rate) £7.83 £7.38 £5.90 £4.20 £3.70
April 2019 £8.21 £7.70 £6.15 £4.35 £3.90

Prepare for 3-yearly pensions re-enrolment

All Employers need to be prepared for a new compulsory pensions re-enrolment for some staff every three years. This applies to all pension schemes. Non-compliance may result in a fine. Read more here.

National Apprenticeship Week: 4 - 8 March 2019

Would you be willing to take on an "Apprentice for a Day?"

National Apprenticeship Week (NAW2019) will be held 4-8 March 2019 and is an exciting opportunity to celebrate apprenticeships and how they benefit people, businesses, communities and our economy. To support this national event, we would like you to open your salon doors to host an "Apprentice for a Day" experience for young people in your local area.

If you are interested in supporting this event, Kate will personally assist you in liaising with your local school's career office to procure an eager learner. Alternatively, your staff/current apprentices may know of someone keen to enjoy a Taster Day at a top quality salon!

Please contact Kate (ten/dtl-sti//etak) if you would like to discuss this further. Remember, it's not just the young people who will benefit! By participating in this event, your business may gain added media exposure and possible new recruits! Please visit NAW2019 website for further information.

Appeal for photos!

We are constantly refreshing the photos on the ITS website and would love to see more of your apprentices in action! Please send images, together with a brief name/description to Kate (ten/dtl-sti//etak). Many thanks to those who have submitted photos already! Keep them coming, please!
