ITS a hair thing - December 2020

Welcome to the December issue of ITS a hair thing!

We hope the range of activities made available to apprentices during 'lockdown 2.0' were enjoyed by all and thank you to those partner salons who were able to accommodate face to face visits – these were a great success! Our special thanks to Leanne Humphries (Velvet Rooms 4 Hair) for facilitating two engaging Zoom sessions.

What a roller-coaster of a year it has been! We cannot let the year end before thanking each and every one of you for pulling together with us as a team, to secure the best outcomes for our apprentices. As small business owners - resilience, will, hope and (finances!) have undoubtedly been tested throughout the pandemic and it is testament to you, as members of this fantastic industry, that you have prevailed. We are delighted to see our partner salons be able to open their doors again in December and hope you have a great month working your magic around the clock– doing what you do best 'behind the chair'.


ITS Office Christmas Closure

The ITS admin team are available between 9.00 and 16.30, Monday to Friday throughout December.

The office will close for the Christmas period on 22nd December and will reopen at 9am on Monday 4th January 2021.


It's a girl!

Team ITS are delighted to share the good news that our Trainer/Assessor - Elisa Dos-Santos gave birth to baby Amelia on 13th November @ 15:39 weighing 8lbs 13oz. Both mum and baby Amelia are doing well.

Incentive scheme for new apprentices - August 2020 to January 2021

*IMPORTANT READ IF YOU ARE ELIGIBLE TO CLAIM

You will recall the Government's incentive for employers that employed new apprentices was announced in July.

As we have explained, the new incentive will be paid directly to you by the Government and the only way you will receive the incentive payments is by making a claim via your apprenticeship service account. Only YOU can do this. We do not have access to this facility to do it for you.

If you have an apprentice on the apprenticeship service that meet's the eligibility criteria below, you need to start thinking about making your claim.

What are the advantages to having an In-Salon Assessor? (ISA)

If you already have an In-Salon Assessor (ISA), you will know that they are a huge asset to your salon and apprentices. Having an ISA gives the apprentice and partner salon more flexibility with getting models in for assessment and the apprentice will not be off the salon floor for so long every month. If you do not have an ISA, the ITS Trainer/Assessor (T/A) will need to assess the apprentice and therefore the apprentice will be off the salon floor for approximately three hours during the T/A's visit. In addition, the apprentice will have to find models to be assessed on the date and time of the T/A's monthly visit. It's more natural for the apprentice to be working on a model which may be suitable for assessment during training and have their ISA on hand to assess.

In addition, should you be required to make a co-investment in line with funding rules (i.e. for apprentices over 19 at sign up), you will pay less than if you did not have an ISA.

January TAQA course is enrolling now!

Are you looking for your next challenge? Want to become an accredited In-salon Assessor?

If yes, we are now accepting applications for our January TAQA course! Run in partnership with Waverley Training Services, this course is for people who are, or will be, assessing apprentices for vocational qualifications and Functional Skills. Achieving this qualification is an opportunity to stretch your skills, improve your career prospects and put something back into the industry.

Entry Requirements

  • Level 3 hairdressing qualification OR CPD evidence of working at Level 3 on the shop floor.
  • Level 2 English & Maths qualification (GCSE A*-C or 4-9). If you do not hold a Level 2 qualification you will be required to take an online assessment.
  • Two active apprentices to assess.

What's involved

  • You must attend all three individual workshops, held at Farnham Memorial Hall, Farnham, GU9 7EE.
    Workshop 1 – Monday, 21st January 2021
    Workshop 2 – Monday, 1st March 2021
    Workshop 3 – Monday, 12th April 2021
  • You will need to write a brief profile of learner type for each (eg: Maths/English difficulties, learning style, etc.) and bring them with you to the first workshop (Learner 1 will need to complete one whole unit or most of. Learner 2 will only require components of a unit or one outcome.)
  • Following completion of the course attendance at the next ITS Partner Salon Network (PSN) Meeting is required.

What qualification will I achieve?

Upon successful completion you will be awarded the Level 3 Certificate in Assessing Vocational Achievement.

The qualification has 2 mandatory units; Unit 301: Understanding the Principles and Practices of Assessments (3 credits) and Unit 302: Assess Occupational Competence in the Work Environment (6 credits).

Course Fees

  • The fees for this course are £480.00.
  • £100 Deposit must be paid to secure your place on the course.
  • Final balance of £380 must be paid at least 5 working days before the first Workshop.

Due to the restrictions caused by COVID-19, we were unable to hold our Partner Salon Network meeting in October. To support you with standardisation, we have created a two-part standardisation series for Unit 201, accessible via our YouTube channel:
