Employers' Frequently Asked Questions

one of our employers

Q What is the benefit to me of the work-based learning programme?

Work-based learning is working and learning in the REAL world. Because your staff are employed and usually in work full-time they are not required to attend college and be absent from the salon. Not only will your staff be taught on a one-to-one basis but they will learn a range of valuable skills such as dealing with clients, and how to be an effective member of your team.

Q How important will my role be in their training?

We at ITS Ltd place enormous importance on the relationships we develop with you and your staff. We need to work together to ensure that every young person benefits from their training and their work complements and supports their learning. You, their employer, will benefit from having a trained work-force, but in return it is your responsibility to ensure that health and safety and equality of opportunity policies are in place and adhered to.

Q Who funds the learning?

If you staff are aged 16-19 the funding is provided from the government via the Learning and Skills Council (LSC). We have to prove that we are using this money effectively and you, the employer, are committed to the principles of work-based learning and of supporting learners to achieve.

Q How often will my salon be visited by the ITS trainer/assessor or learning support mentor?

This will depend on your learners' progress but as a general rule every two to four weeks.

Q Will I or my seniors be able to assess the learners too?

Only if an Assessor Award is held by the individual and they are registered with us.

Q What should I do if a learner has an accident?

Always record it in the accident book. Refer to the RIDDOR leaflet and the summary of the RIDDOR regulations in the 'Health and Safety for hairdressers' booklet' provided by ITS Ltd in case it is a reportable incident, and report it to ITS Ltd.

Q What should I do if a learner develops dermatitis?

If one of your staff is diagnosed with dermatitis this MUST be reported by filling in the Health and Safety Executive's online "Report of a case of disease" form (see your Health and Safety and RIDDOR booklets). Report it to ITS Ltd and the learner MUST seek medical advice.

Q What should I do if a learner cuts their finger?

Record it on the log provided in the Work-Based Learning Guide. Be aware of blood-borne diseases (see Section 4 - Health and Safety of WBLG)

Q What are my other health and safety obligations and what checks are carried out by ITS Ltd?

Go to the Health and Safety page

Q What should I do if a learner is off sick?

Phone ITS Ltd or inform the trainer/assessor direct to let us know. If the trainer/assessor has arranged a visit on a day when the learner is not there they MUST be told because we will charge for wasted visits.

Q What should I do if a learner is on holiday when the trainer/assessor or learning support mentor is due to visit?

Phone ITS Ltd or inform the trainer/asseessor direct.

Q What should I do if I have a problem with a learner eg poor timekeeping?

If there is a problem or a dispute with an individual learner it is helpful if ITS Ltd are aware. We can help or support you to tackle these kind of problems. All the trainer/assesssors have worked in salons, most still do and several are salon owners, so they have been in your shoes!

Q What cleaning tasks can I ask my learners to do?

Your learners will be expected to clean basins, sweep the floor, clean mirrors, dust shelves etc and generally keep work areas clean. They are not expected to clean shop windows or scrub floors!

Q Should I provide my learners with a Contract of Employment?

Yes. This document outlines the terms and conditions of their employment, such as working hours etc. A Do it Yourself online contract can be found at the Business Link Website. Alternatively, click here for information on what a contract should include and an example contract which can be adapted for your use, and then printed off and signed by yourself and your employee.
